Lesson Plan Sample II: The Math We Use Everyday

This lesson is based on three standards that the students must learn. I have created this lesson using a template given to me by my professor. This lesson allows the students to have a little independence from sitting in their seats and doing book work. I have four stations created where students go as a team and complete each station. The first station is the computer where students will use Math Blaster software. The second station is the students working on worksheets, which you may download for your own use. The third station is having the students test each other with flash cards on multiplication and division. And the final station is having the students come up with their own problems and having their classmate solve them.

NETS-S Standards

NETS-S 1 “Use keyboard and other common input and output devices (including adaptive devices when necessary) efficiently and effectively”

NETS-S 8 “Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software) for problem solving, self-directed learning and extended learning activities”

Needed Materials

Computer with keyboard and mouse (5 for students to share, 1 for teacher)

Math Blaster Software, Grade 3 (5 copies, 1 for each computer)

Worksheet practicing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division (1 for each student, 1 key for teacher)

Flash cards for multiplication and division (1 set of both)

White boards with dry erase markers and erasers (1 for each student)

Procedure

Sponge Activity

Ask students to write five multiplication questions that they can answer on a piece of scratch paper

Anticipatory Set

Ask students:

· Ask students what they know or remember about multiplication

Announce Outline/Objectives

Content Delivery

Teach from the book using the board to show step-by-step instructions for how to do the multiplication problems larger than products of 100. Have students use their white boards to solve the practice problems, and ask one student to come up to the board and show their answer and the steps they used to get that answer. Help students to understand multiplication by playing around the world, a game where they compete with each other to answer a math problem off a flash grade correctly and first. You play until there is only one student who has gotten no wrong answers. The students will play around the world and the winner will receive $50 in school play money.

Activity

Break students up into 4 groups of 5 students

· Station 1: Computers where students play Math Blaster for 10 minutes

· Station 2: Students fill out worksheets going over addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division for 10 minutes

· Station 3: Students use flash cards for multiplication and division to quiz each other and see how fast they are able to recall information for 10 minutes

· Station 4: Students will use whiteboards to work out multiplication problems whose products are no more than 100, students will come up with their own problems, but the problem and answer must be approved and checked by the teacher for 10 minutes

Review

Ask students:

· Ask students to recall five problems from their times table starting with zero, each student will say the next five problems and answers until all the students have gone

· Assessment

§ Have students switch their sponge activity papers around and answer the one they get, can not be their own

· “Teaser” for tomorrow’s lesson
